DESCRIPTION:Come help us wash & dry our sleeping bags!\nEvery summer we put our down sleeping bags through a lot of use and by the end they are in desperate need of washing. Now is the time to prepare them for our upcoming weekend camping trips. The most challenging part is drying our down sleeping bags which requires low heat and careful handling. DESCRIPTION:Galveston State Park\n\nCalling all Junior Leaders and passionate volunteers!  \nThe Junior Leaders Program provides young leaders with greater opportunities to explore nature while enhancing critical traits and growing strong relationships and leadership skills in order to create role models for The Woods Project. Join us for an unforgettable ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ style trip at beautiful Galveston State Park where we will be kayaking with our summer alumni students and new JLP recruits and enjoying the lovely views Galveston has to offer. This ‘JLP Orientation’ will review the Junior Leaders’ mission statement\, provide an introduction to the program\, and an overview of the year full of activities to come.\n\nOpportunities for volunteer trip leaders are available. We are looking for volunteers who:\n\n\nCan help build rapport among the group\, facilitate group activities (most will be student led\, but will need some guidance)\nAre able to demonstrate and help foster conversations on the TWP character traits\nIs flexible with the schedule\, can go with the flow – we will have an agenda\, but students will have a say in their evening activities\nIs interested in outdoor cooking and trail running weekend meals such as dutch oven dump cakes\, french toast\, or maybe pizza!\nHas kayaking experience (preferred but not required)\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE! \nPlease note:  The trip signup is your opportunity to make your preferences and availability for our weekend trips known.  We will make our best effort to place you on the trip(s) that you have requested.  However\, due to limits on capacity\, as well as the need to maintain a reasonable adult:student ratio\, there may be trips where we do not have space for every leader who would like to attend. SUMMARY:Fall Weekend Trip #1
DESCRIPTION:Brazos Bend State Park or Turkey Creek Backpacking\nBrazos Bend State Park: We will be doing some hiking\, biking\, and exploring of the state park. Brazos Bend is known for its alligator population and unique features to this part of Texas\, so come ready to see some incredible wildlife while spending the day outside exploring. Both Friday and Saturday nights will be spent camping at Brazos Bend. \nTurkey Creek Backpacking:  You can’t beat backpacking in the fall in Texas! Please join us for a great weekend exploring a section of the Big Thicket National Preserve! On Saturday\, the group will head out to the Turkey Creek Trail. Three groups of hikers will hike 12 miles in total between Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday evening will be spent at a campsite along the trail. DESCRIPTION:Walk for The Woods Project – Volunteers\nThe Woods Project is hosting our 12th annual Walk for The Woods Project event\, presented by ENGIE\, on Saturday\, November 4\, 2023 at BakerRipley- Ripley House. \nThe Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year and will help us provide life-changing leadership development opportunities to even more Houston high school students from low-income communities. Nearly 200 students are expected to participate in our 2-week wilderness immersion program in summer 2024! \nThis event would not be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Many volunteer roles are available. DESCRIPTION:Walk for The Woods Project – Volunteers Needed\n\nThe Woods Project is hosting our 12th annual Walk for The Woods Project event\, presented by ENGIE\, on Saturday\, November 4\, 2023 at BakerRipley- Ripley House. \nThe Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year and will help us provide life-changing leadership development opportunities to even more Houston high school students from low-income communities. Nearly 200 students are expected to participate in our 2-week wilderness immersion program in summer 2024! \nThis event would not be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Many volunteer roles are available. We will day hike parts of the 655-acre sanctuary\, exploring the local fauna and wildlife. This trip will combine camping with a service learning project to help maintain and preserve the area! \nTurkey Creek Backpacking:  You can’t beat backpacking in the fall in Texas! Please join us for a great weekend exploring a section of the Big Thicket National Preserve! On Saturday\, the group will head out to the Turkey Creek Trail. Three groups of hikers will hike 12 miles in total between Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday evening will be spent at a campsite along the trail. Upon finishing the hike on Sunday morning\, the group will head back to Houston at approximately 12:00pm. \nREGISTER HERE! \nPlease note:  The trip signup is your opportunity to make your preferences and availability for our weekend trips known.  We will make our best effort to place you on the trip(s) that you have requested.  However\, due to limits on capacity\, as well as the need to maintain a reasonable adult:student ratio\, there may be trips where we do not have space for every leader who would like to attend. DESCRIPTION:Event Canceled due to inclement weather. \nThis is our biggest gear volunteer day of the year!  On this day\, we will count all of our gear so that we will be prepared for spring and summer trips\, as well as set up all of our tents to ensure that they are in good working order after so much use in the prior summer and fall! \nWe will meet at The Woods Project Warehouse located on 6910 Renwick at 8:45am in order to begin at 9am.  A group will head out to Bayland Park for tent setup\, and the remainder will stay at the warehouse for gear inventory. \nPlease dress comfortably\, and bring a refillable water bottle.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nIf you have not volunteered with us before\, please fill out our event volunteer form ahead of time for yourself and for anyone that comes with you. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Diana Liga at diana@thewoodsproject.org.
