NEW Geology Program for Summer 2015

Location: Yellowstone Country

Trip Dates: July 26-August 9

Get ready for grizzly bears and eagles. Geysers and mud pots. Forests and lakes. Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area offer countless opportunities for adventure, discovery, exploration and ways to connect to nature. It is the core of one of the last, nearly intact, natural ecosystems in the Earth’s temperate zone and an ideal place to learn about the earth’s formations. The Woods Project is thrilled for its inaugural Geology Program in Yellowstone Country to kick off this summer. This program is a special opportunity for 18 students from Houston who show exceptional interest in science, are highly curious, show strong leadership skills, and are ready for a spectacular adventure.

Participants will fly to Billings, Montana and be transported to Yellowstone Bighorn Research Association  (www.ybra.org), a college level geology field camp where our group will be the only high school students participating in programs. While there, they will learn basic geology principles and see first-hand some of the most amazing geological formation and landscapes in the United States.

The group will then be transported to Yellowstone National Park where they will camp in the Superintendent’s Campground and spend their days with National Park Service Rangers and TWP geology leaders learning the history of the park and exploring the geysers, mud pots, and other unique volcanic features in the park.

The trip will finish up with a four night backpack trip where participants will be challenged to travel through wild country with all of their gear on their back. Communication and leadership skills will be tested as students learn to rely on their peers to travel through some of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes that this country has to offer.
